Granted. Drills stop working. Oil production goes down the tubes, holes can never be put in a board, and all those wonderful diamond tipped drills we have for exploration and for the construction of tunnels are useless. With millions, if not billions, of dollars of equipment discarded, tens of thousands of jobs are lost worldwide. We are thrown into another recession. On the plus side, because of energy needs, we build more nuclear power plants. These power plants bring about a golden age of energy, with power being so cheap and easy to produce that electric cars are now viable. Recharge times are now numbered in minutes instead of hours, due to new materials invented to help out with the transportation crisis. More materials are shipped by rail, bringing back the train as a primary type of transport across land. The Zeppelin is now being used instead of airplanes, with leisurely trips across the Atlantic and the Pacific being the norm for vacations. Nuclear physics makes leaps forward, and nuclear power is produced cheaply for commercial boats. The economy is now Booming. Our sudden interest in the sciences spurs forth a movement to further Space Travel. Asteroid mining is common. Billions of tons of metals, both precious and practical, are shipped to earth within a three year period. With these new materials already in space, we build Orbital Space Stations larger than before. These space stations are almost fully self sufficient, with only a little bit of metal being needed every few years to replace certain components. We eventually unlock the key to FTL travel, and within Fifty years, have three offworld colonies. Their populations number in the hundreds of thousands. On a further note, it was the materials of all the drills that were useless that helped us get a new supply of materials quickly. The principle of drilling eventually works again, with Scientists never quite understanding what happened. You can never tell people that it was you, YOU SPECIFICALLY, who ushered in this new age. However, this was happening in the
Raptor Wars, the actual Battle in which you died. This was the great objective that you were defending. When you broke the siege, it was so that you could get the supplies of the necessary Hydrogen and Oxygen fuel for the rocket that brought up the last piece of the automated Asteroid mining machinery.
I wish I could figure out how to turn these posts into a well written novel.
